2021 JEEP WRANGLER VS. 2021 FORD BRONCO COMPARISON

The Jeep Wrangler is a segment-defining legend, and the all-new Ford Bronco looks to butt up right against our iconic Jeep. The 2021 Ford Bronco looks awfully similar to the 2021 Jeep Wrangler in terms of build and design, but how do they stack up in that category and across many others that are of prime importance for off-road SUV drivers? Explore our comparison where we’ve examined these unique models’ engines, off-road ability, design and more. Is it the legendary forebearer who’s still adapting after all these years or the new kid on the block that deserves your time and attention? The 2021 Jeep Wrangler vs. the 2021 Ford Bronco: a new rivalry is about to be restarted.

Engines

The Wrangler bests the Bronco right out of the gate in the standard engines, with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque out of its Pentastar 3.6L V6, while the Bronco is fitted with a 2.3L EcoBoost engine at 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. While the Bronco’s other engines do produce exceptional power, they can’t match the versatility and incoming top tier engine of the Wrangler. The 3.0L turbocharged diesel on the Wrangler is unique to it, with 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Soon putting it over the edge is the Rubicon 392, introducing a 6.4L V8 engine with a huge 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Off-Road Capability

It all starts with the build of the two vehicles when it comes to what they can and can’t accomplish off road. The Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles, as opposed to the Bronco’s independent front suspension, which immediately makes it suffer for ground clearance. The Bronco may best in breakover and departure angles, but it’s in the approach angle where the Wrangler truly shines. You need to get over that big hurdle before anything else, and the 44° and 43.9° of the 4-door and 2-door of the Wrangler easily bests the Bronco’s 43.2° angle. Coming in clutch on the Wrangler is its manual transfer case, letting you pull the lever and feel the anticipation as you size up your latest adventure. Perhaps most importantly is the direct aftermarket support currently available for the Wrangler, as we know how much everyone loves to personalize and upgrade their Jeeps, modifying it to their heart’s content. Ford intends to have their own support for upgrades and factory accessory add-ons, but nowhere near what Jeep can offer now.

Design

Look familiar? We thought so, too. The Ford Bronco may be back for 2021 in a new modern design, but in a look that looks eerily similar to the Jeep Wrangler and its iconic design that’s been born and bred out of its legacy, while staying incredibly modern. Where Ford takes their all-new Bronco and presents it in a blocky frame that intends to offer a slick finish in futuristic styling, Jeep is more able to balance the two, paying homage to the yesteryear roots of the Wrangler while perfectly fine-tuning it for modern drivers. The Wrangler is an off-road ready vehicle, but still prioritizes a high-grade of luxury and style both inside and out. Of course, it still provides the many storage options and versatile top, door and windshield options for any adventure. While the Bronco can do some of those as well, it doesn’t offer a soft top or removable windshield. That means you can only truly get that “naked” Jeep feel in the Wrangler, with the windshield, doors and top all off.

Jeep Wrangler Vs. Ford Bronco Verdict

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but why get the copy when you can have the original that made the segment famous? No slouch either is the Wrangler, and while the Bronco is shiny and all-new, Jeep continuously makes upgrades and additions to the Wrangler, with 2021 and beyond seeing large improvements. Soon we’ll see the Wrangler 4xe, the groundbreaking Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle version of this icon. For power, the Wrangler is ready to blow the Bronco out of the water with the Rubicon 392 and its 6.4L V8 engine. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is as capable as ever, in a stylish and off-road ready design that the 2021 Ford Bronco wishes it could pull off as well as the originator.
