Why Regular Maintenance Matters

Modern automobiles are more reliable than ever. Advances in all areas of manufacturing have created some incredible platforms. However, regular maintenance and service are required to keep everything running as intended. When a vehicle owner skips service appointments, a lot of bad things can happen. Oil breaks down and can contaminate the engine. Filters get clogged and lose effectiveness. All of this leads to the engine needing to work harder, which will decrease fuel economy.

One of the easiest things you can do to help maintain (or even improve) your vehicle’s fuel economy scores is to make sure the tires are properly inflated. When there is too little air in the tires, more tread makes contact with the road, hurting fuel economy.

Avoid Driving Too Aggressively

There are a lot of negative consequences to be had when driving too fast. One that won’t have drivers ending up with a court date is vastly lowered fuel economy scores. Automotive engines are designed to operate most efficiently at speeds between 70 and 80 km/h. Our team of service experts suggest gently accelerating up to the speed limit to maintain consistent fuel usage. Additionally, when you accelerate too quickly, that means you’ll also have to hit the brakes harder to stop for the next intersection. Hard braking is notorious for reducing fuel economy.

Shed Unnecessary Clutter

Hauling around as little as 45 kg of unnecessary weight can cause an appreciable loss of fuel efficiency. Clear out backpacks and sports gear that you aren’t regularly using. Not only is it just good practice to keep your vehicle tidy and organized, it turns out doing so can actually help save you money on monthly fuel costs. Also, if you still have removable roof racks, cargo boxes or bike racks on your vehicle from a previous trip, the additional drag and weight could reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 17 percent.
