OUT OF PROVINCE & CVIP VEHICLE INSPECTIONS
OUT OF PROVINCE & CVIP VEHICLE INSPECTIONS
Posted on June 9, 2023
Ensuring the safety of our Alberta roads means making certain that all vehicles meet the province’s quality and safety guidelines. Inspections for out-of-province and commercial vehicles are mandated by the Government of Alberta. Every vehicle from outside of Alberta, as well as any commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, motor coaches, etc.) need to pass an inspection to travel and work inside of the province. At Southside Dodge, we offer both out-of-province and CVIP inspections from our certified technicians, to get your vehicles passed and out on the road in no time. Read on to learn more about these inspections, what they cover, cost and how long they last.
What is an Out of Province Inspection?
Any vehicle that comes into Alberta from outside the province must pass an inspection before it is able to have license plates issued. Once it has passed its OOP inspection, you then have 14 days to register the vehicle in Alberta.

What Does an Out of Province Inspection Include?
An out of province inspection covers basically every vehicle component. The technician will also examine the vehicle’s structural integrity for any signs of previous repairs or collision damage, as well as for any corrosion that may be occurring. Important systems inspected include:
- Braking systems
- Driveline
- Fuel & exhaust systems
- Electrical
- Engine controls

How Long is an Out of Province Inspection Good For?
A out-of-province vehicle inspection is good for 14 days, which within that time you are required to register the vehicle in Alberta. If you don’t register the vehicle within that allotted time, you must then get a full OOP inspection again. If your vehicle fails the initial inspection, you have 10 days to get any repairs done to avoid having to get the full inspection again. When you’ve presented the fixed vehicle within those 10 days you only have to get those repairs verified.
What is a CVIP Inspection?
In order to operate commercial vehicles (like trucks, trailers, buses, vans, motor coaches etc.) on Alberta highways you need a CVIP inspection. CVIP stands for Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program, which sets out to establish and enforce a set of quality standards that commercial vehicles must abide by for proper road safety. Once passed, you’ll receive a certificate and a decal to put on the vehicle as proof.
