Located approximately halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, Red Deer has many attractions that will keep the whole family entertained. With four seasons that range from swimsuit weather in the summer to a pristine, snow-covered landscape in winter, residents can fully embrace the festivities of every season. No matter what the season, you can be assured of having a fantastic time when you visit the city of Red Deer.

Red Deer is a thriving community with just over one hundred thousand residents. The city bumps up against the shores of the Red Deer River, with a golf and country club available on the outskirts of town. There are a variety of food and beverage options featuring everything from the Little Ice Cream and Soda Shoppe to live music at Bo’s Bar and Stage and craft beer at the Troubled Monk. But the city is best know for three key things:

1. Rich Cultural History

Red Deer is located on lands that used to be inhabited by the Blackfoot, Plains Cree, and Stoney people. Today, the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery maintains a renowned collection of First Nations art. The museum is located in the Rotary Recreation Park and features history programs as well as regular art exhibits. The remarkable Red Deer exhibit details the unique history of settlement and growth in the region and showcases the pioneer spirit of the town.

2. Parks and Recreation

Red Deer offers a variety of parks and venues that allow for fun and excitement for the whole family. The Gaetz Lakes Migratory Bird Sanctuary covers nearly 300 acres and has walking trails and gardens. The Lions Campground sits right on the shores of the river and boasts tent or RV sites, showers, laundry, and playgrounds. The Canyon Ski Area sits 9 kilometers east of town with multiple chair lifts and a variety of challenging runs. Or, check out the Kinex Arena: a full-sized hockey facility that can be reserved throughout the year for meetings, birthday parties, or other gatherings.

3. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame

Created in 1957 by the Alberta Amateur Athletic Union, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is an attraction that showcases the athletic achievements of Alberta’s greatest athletes. Originally established in Edmonton, the museum eventually came to settle in Red Deer in 1999. The museum features jerseys and equipment from famous athletes and even offers interactive displays and games including virtual baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer. There’s also a climbing wall and a golf putting area.
