Ram 1500 Crew Cab: 2020 IIHS Top Safety Rating

2021 Ram 1500 parked in a parkade with the sun setting behind itThe 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab is proud to have received the title of a 2020 Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. This rating is specific to the Ram 1500 Crew Cab models with Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking and LED projector headlights (with high-beam assist), as it’s the latest safety necessity from IIHS. Not only that, but this Ram 1500 Crew Cab is the first pickup to garner an achievement like this under the IIHS’s new testing regime, with more strict qualifications. The truck was evaluated under six crashworthiness tests, including three variants of frontal crashes, along with tests that viewed damage under side, rear and rollover conditions. This was instrumental in the 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab gaining this 2020 IIHS Top Safety Rating honour, achieving the highest score possible in each one!

What is the IIHS, and Why Do They Matter?

The IIHS, or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, is a nonprofit, independent organization whose mission is to reduce the damages from vehicle crashes, including deaths, injuries and property damage. Originally founded in 1959 by three large insurance associations who set to support highway safety efforts, it was eventually reinvented 10 years later toward more educational research through not only crash prevention but also a scientific way of outlining ways to reduce losses from crashes. Their three main scientific approaches cover as follows:

  • Human factors: impaired drivers, teenage drivers, fatigue, seatbelt use, etc.
  • Crash avoidance & crash worthiness: crash tests remain imperative to research.
  • Physical environment: road designs, roadside hazards, etc.

The IIHS Vehicle Research Center, which opened in 1992, allows for the state-of-the-art IIHS safety and crash tests to take place. This facility leads the way toward granting those worthy vehicles a Top Safety Picking designation through stringent testing, which the 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab wears with honour.

What is Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking?

Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking is the newest requirement from IIHS needed to be able to garner the Top Safety Pick rating. Using advanced sensor and camera tech, your Ram will monitor for pedestrians, warning you to brake if an impact is impending, or brake itself if you don’t react. The Ram Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking system received an “advanced” rating from IIHS, outlining both its safety and technological prowess. You can find the Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking system on the Ram 1500’s Safety Group Package, alongside other helpful features like Lane Departure Warning Plus, Forward Collision Warning and more.

How Does Pedestrian/Automatic Emergency Braking Work?

Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking is built off the Ram’s already in place Automatic Emergency Braking. This sensor-fusion system utilizes both radar sensors and cameras, combining the technology to ascertain if a front impact may be imminent. The system alerts the driver to this, but if the driver doesn’t respond with action the system will activate the vehicle’s brakes to avoid or lessen the impact of the collision. Automatic Emergency Braking itself garnered the “superior” rating, the highest mark possible in a vehicle-to-vehicle situation. This system has been upgraded to identify pedestrians, acting similarly in response to vehicle collisions, adapting depending on driving and environment conditions like speed and proximity.
